History of the

WHSC and the Eastside Christian Action Group

The city contributed an additional 2.5 million dollars for the infrastructure development to support the construction of the Sports Complex. The Eastside Christian Action Group (ECAG) was formed to oversee the construction of the facility. Mr. Porter Dillard served as the visionary architect for the design of the state-of-the-art multipurpose facility, which features a football stadium, track, amphitheater, soccer fields, walking trails, and an administrative center. Mr. Frank Dunn served as the first Executive Director of ECAG, greatly benefitting the community through volunteering of his services. It took four years, but the grand opening of the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex was in August 2012.

The city of San Antonio financially supported the operations of the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex for the first 6 years. The city gradually reduced this support over time, while the leadership of ECAG developed financial plans for sustainment of the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex. For nearly the last 3 years, funds generated through rental fees and philanthropic giving have primarily sustained the operations of the WHSC, while the city during these latter years has maintained the grounds of the facility—for which we are grateful. We are also grateful to the voters of the City of San Antonio, who approved 3 million dollars in the 2017 City Bond to go toward the building of a Fieldhouse and Multipurpose Center at the football stadium.

The new Fieldhouse will have locker rooms, showers, and team meeting spaces. The multipurpose center will be a separate building that will include a banquet hall capable of seating 240 persons, a warming kitchen, an administrative office, and a referee’s lounge. The West East Design Group of San Antonio, with the oversight of ECAG, completed the construction design of this project last year. Mr. Porter Dillard served admirably as a volunteer consultant during the construction design, and we are tremendously indebted to him. This project is currently under bid and we expect it to be completed by the summer of 2021.

We also owe a tremendous debt to Representative Barbara Hawkins, former Councilman Art Hall, and County Commissioner Tommy Calvert, who all have staunchly advocated for this new building project, to the point of finding additional funds to make sure that these facilities will be of the highest quality. Its construction will complete the football stadium and will make us more attractive for larger events, including high school football playoff games.

Mr. Anthony Warren of Standard of Athletics served as operations manager of the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex under the oversight of the George Gervin Youth Center, from the latter part of 2015 until December 2018. Since January 2019, the Secretary of the Board, Ms. Madge “Clo” Fowler, has also served as the Program Administrator of the Complex and Mr. Jarrod Bueno has served as the on-site Operations Manager. We are grateful to them for their tremendous service. We also are thankful to each member of the ECAG Board who has sacrificed time, talent, and treasure to make sure that this facility remains available to the community for years and years to come.
